Physical vs. virtual kanban board: which is the best?

I have a clear preference for the physical boards but I will use virtual
boards if there is necessity of that.

The advantages to a physical board are basically:

Information is constantly radiated without having to call it up or log in or
what have you
– Very easy to manipulate and put ad hoc things on board that are helpful
– Very easy to have standups around it
– Facilitates face-to-face communication by bringing interested parties together
into the same area

On the other hand, digital boards are accessible from anywhere, making remote
collaboration very easy.
Furthermore, they are great for distributed teams  and they link directly to
the associated tickets.

Recently, I help to implement physical kanban board in small team but
I have to use a virtual kanban board in order to get visible the board
to some stakeholders which are located far away from development team.

Thanks to this experience I’ve gotten a broader perspective.

According to my experience I am recommending Leankit (
which is very simple and have a free version to support up to three boards.

Have I knew about your favorite virtual board? By all means, clue me
in the comments!

I am all about helping companies to adopt agile as methodology in Chile. Why? I believe many organizations think that agile is not for Chilean companies because of Chilean culture is totally different from i.e. USA culture but I worked with Chilean professionals who after using agile realized it is feasible to implement it. Agile works in small and large projects and there are many evidences which demonstrate this.

    1. Hi Vladimir

I have never heard about Kanbanflow so I will take a look on it.

Nowadays, I am using Kanbanize that has very friendly interface on my iPhone.

      Best Regards,

      1. Vladimir, Mario – since I discovered the Kanban Tool ( I’m using only it instead of physical boards. For me the free version is completely enough – that is why it is a cheaper solution than buying sticky notes 🙂

        1. Hi Maria

The idea to use a physical board is to have a radiator of information for your team. If you only use Virtual board
your team could lose visibility of their work.

If you want to chat on this (or other topic related to Kanban) feel free to reach me on Skype (metlucero is my id).
