New Agile roles?

After Reading “People’s Scrum” by Tobias Mayer, I started feel happy that someone clever and more experience than me discussed remote teams and other bad smell in Agile behavior in many companies. Unfortunately, I realized that there are many companies that have posted many job offers such as Scrum Master / Team Leader, QA Analyst / Scrum Master, Scrum Master / Developer and  other bad combinations using Scrum Master. In fact, I saw one that I considered the worse that is Scrum Master  technical / Product Owner.

First of all, working with remote teams is only for economic reasons because companies discovered many years ago that have developers and testers in India or South America (I worked a year for an American company who pays me thirty percent of the salary of my colleague in the US) or Eastern Europe. Furthermore, the first thing that we called remote working was the famous “Software factory” so there is not logical or business reason to use distributed teams apart from getting more money paying less.

True story

Once a company hired to work as Scrum Master / Scrum Coach for dealing with three Scrum teams. Then I convinced them that one of the teams need to follow Kanban instead of Scrum because they work fixing bugs in production all day long. Unfortunately, they want to work with several projects but without hiring new professionals so they split one Scrum team to build a new one. To conclude, they have two tiny teams composed: Team 1: two developers and one tester and Team 2: composed of three developers and one Scrum Master junior / tester and two developers.

As soon as an Agile Coach realized about the new structure claimed to me and I responded the manager want to work with different new projects with the same budget. Obviously, her answer was the correct: That is not Scrum. Later I prefer to quit that company because I consider that you have to be Agile and not selling your professionals principles for a few  (or a lot of) dollars.

To conclude, if your company is really interested to adopt Agile I recommend to investigate what is Agile. Agile won’t improve your company if you are not available to invest money and effort and last but not least, you should consider hiring Agile training, Agile Coach (or any Agile consultant) to help in the transition from Waterfall to Agile.

different from i.e. USA culture but I worked with Chilean professionals who after using agile realized it is feasible
to implement it.

Agile works in small and large projects and there are many evidences which demonstrate this.
