If you go to the gym and you want to get fit many people (including the staff of the gym) would recommend you to hire a personal trainer. Furthermore, if you start playing tennis with a friend of yours after a while you will realise that to improve your game you will have to take some tennis lessons with a coach. Well, this pattern is similar to Agile.
In fact, you have to get a training in order to know about the Agile values. Then a Scrum Coach has to coach your team in order to know everything about the roles and ceremonies of the framework. Later, when you work with Scrum for several months you have to wonder: how can my team get better results? One of the best way it would be to hire an Agile Coach. However, as every company around the world your IT department should struggle with the budget because of that your IT manager would prefer to hire the best and cheaper Agile Coach. For the same reason many companies prefer to deal with remote developers instead to work with local guys. I know that Agile push everybody to work together co-located in order to get an easy feedback from the Product Owner but money set the rules in each company.
In addition, if you need (or want) to hire a good Agile Coach you have to accept that he will charge his work per hour in dollars (or in your currency) so you have to think about investing a lot of money and effort with this guy.
Don’t worry about that because you have another cheaper option, you should hire an Agile Virtual Coach that helps you in the same way that the local guy but with lowest rates and you can request his assistance online for all day long that for him would not be a big deal because he only needs a good internet connection!!!
For instance, I am coaching a Product Owner located in Los Angeles (California) who requested my services because he need some help to deal with a new Scrum team. We use Skype to communicate each other and Google Drive to share templates and documents.
To conclude, if you need an Agile Coach but your company is running out of money go ahead and hire a remote Agile Coach or I would like to mention as “Agile Virtual Coach”
